Works of furniture, painting and sculpture will all be on view, with the co-curators stating that one of the goals of the event is to build models for expression to be paired with business. Nike issued a brief on what goes into a City Connect uniform, and Goldberg and Benesh filled out a 12-page questionnaire posing queries such as, “What does New York mean? ” Nike sent five design concepts based on the answers, and the team gave notes or directions to scrap whatever look altogether; five more designs would follow. Last week, editors from AD’s global editions gathered for Milan Design Week 2024—and even now, we’re feeling the electricity.

Finally, Warp & Weft’s collaboration with Deborah Berke made a big impression at the fair’s entrance, with understated rug designs that evoke the changing quality of light from dawn to dusk. This event will feature Rachel Inman, a UX Design Lead at Google and someone who brings human-centered design expertise, deep cross-functional collaboration, and inspired vision to an array of complex problem spaces -- taking features and products from whiteboard to reality. Attendees will hear from Rachel about her first-hand experience as a designer for an application that plays a prominent role in the way people navigate cities around the world. We love a good collection of incredible objects—and that’s exactly what JONALDDUDD assembles each year. JONALDDUDD’s annual display during New York Design Week is really an exercise in punk—a display of “conceptual works challenging the conventions of contemporary design” and “a platform for dissenting voices working in and around the field of design,” boasts its website. Organized by Chris Held and Lydia Cambron, the resulting irreverent display of color, shape, and varying degrees of functionality make JONALDDUDD a sight to see.

A collection of showrooms in Soho have put together an event that will activate the streetscape on a block that includes a variety of different brands. Irish furniture company Orior will have a special window installation while Stellar Works has teamed up with Sony for a large-scale installation. The world's largest design event Milan design week returns in 2025 with design fair Salone del Mobile and a collection of fringe events known as fuorisalone. In the air is a desire for solidity, for concreteness, for materiality—and pieces that carry their own weight, in every sense, are breaking into domestic design. So it’s logical that materials like travertine—and even more so, marble—are playing an important role in this design week.
Recognized brands, leading galleries, groundbreaking curatorial collectives, independent studios, and emerging talents took the opportunity to make a splash during this year’s event (notably, its 10th edition). Exhibitors debuting their latest wares to a national and international audience eagerly shared what they’d been working on over the past two years. Presented at the Lower East Side’s Voltz Clarke gallery, the showcase will include Danny Kaplan’s first ceramic and wood furniture pieces, and a selection from New York duo Alexis & Ginger’s debut collection. Founded in the nation of Georgia by Nata Janberidze and Keti Toloraia in 2007, the architecture and design studio coupled these pieces with tall, slender, rough-hewn lamps with upturned glass shades reminiscent of a closed flower. Lanvin selected the two women behind Rooms Studio as design partners to mirror the trailblazing path of founding designer Jeanne Lanvin. There were also many direct references to mushrooms, mold, and fungi, a continuation of a trend that’s already been extremely popular in décor and has taken over social media the same way Memphis did a few years ago. Reaching peak mushroom seems like an apt metaphor for the past couple of years — they’re ephemeral, strangely beautiful, and emerge from decay.
Each May, New York, already a bustling hub of creativity, welcomes even more manifestations of great design during NYCxDesign. Once known as New York Design Week, the event, which encompasses five fairs (ICFF, Wanted Design Brooklyn and Manhattan, Sight Unseen, and Brooklyn Designs), has sprawled out in recent years to take over the better part of May and most of the city's boroughs. From Brooklyn's Industry City to the Javits Center on the banks of the Hudson River—and everywhere in between—theres's good design to be seen across the city.
Join argodesign at their studio in Williamsburg, Brooklyn for an interactive open studio and happy hour event, featuring a chance to explore the power of generative computing and AI tools. Don’t miss the interactive KaraokeGPT installation, with custom lyrics to your favorite hits powered by ChatGPT. The guide features a range of events across the eight days, which can be filtered by date and event type using the dropdown menu on the left-hand side of the page. In addition, the exhibit will showcase technological explorations from NASA, setting it apart from the previous MAGENTAVERSE exhibit at ARTECHOUSE Miami (see designboom’s coverage here).
Alongside highlights that include new furniture, lighting, his signature fibreglass chairs and a dining set produced in collaboration with Matter founder Jamie Gray, Kim’s new showing is especially momentous because it also features paintings by his mother, MyoungAe Lee - an artist in her own right. A poetic dialogue is not only palpable through the different mediums on show, but also in the relationship between mother and son. Now also contemporaries and collaborators, this show lovingly comments on the idea of creating a sense of place. There are few fashion gurus as revered by interior designers like Issey Miyake, meaning the appeal of their Milan Design Week outings extends far beyond the fashion crowd. That was certainly the case with this week’s offering at their Milan flagship, which drew an eclectic stream of visitors this week to view the brand’s collaboration with the Dutch collective We Make Carpets. These were impressive feats of craftmanship of which the brand’s founder—the late, great Issey-san—would certainly be proud.
MUJI IS invites guests to take “a walk in the forest of verbs, ” inspired by the brand’s book by the same name. The Queensboro Bridge appears on the hat, and its distinctive steel latticework is cross-sectioned on the sleeves and down the pant legs. And it has many iconic things already integrated into uniforms for the city’s other sports. The Nets have regularly drawn inspiration from New York’s art scene, the Knicks from the FDNY and the idea that the city never sleeps. Started in 2021, Nike’s City Connect series challenges teams to design a new uniform, distinct from their usual set, that tells a story about its home.
With the Ray chair, McInnis used rough pea gravel to bind French-style chair legs to a folding chair adorned with Swarovski crystals, velvet upholstery, and a yellow chain — a completely unexpected mix. Additional product highlights at the fair included the debut of Danver’s Urbane collection, with designer Daniel Germani in-booth to show off the unit’s finer details. At Ethnicraft, fairgoers encountered moody, architecturally-inspired wood accessories, and we expect to see many of them propping bookshelves and desks for years to come.
Made using traditional techniques of sculpting beeswax molds and casting the pieces from molten bronze, each of the works, which ranges from tables to lamps and light sconces, is steeped in artistry. The original Louis Vuitton product, hardsided trunks, will take center stage, including the Capucines Trunk, designed specifically to house the Maison’s signature bag.
